Microteaching
So today I had a microteaching lesson in class, where I taught a 15-20 minute lesson. This lesson used knowledge of solving systems of linear equations using the substitution method and using that knowledge to understand word problems. I started the class with a warm-up, solving given systems with two variables, and then did an example with a word problem, explaining how to create equations based on given information. The students worked on a worksheet in pairs, then individually. Overall, I feel like the lesson went very well and I was able to see where students were struggling and what concepts they grasped. It was great to finally get that hands-on teaching experience, even if it was just a few of my classmates.

i thought your lesson went very well. it seemed to be a little difficult because there needed to be a little information already known on the topic but it was taught very well. i started the lesson looking at the paper and having no idea what to do. once you were done i had good understanding of the material. from a teaching stand point there weren't a lot of breaks in speech and the individual help was good
ReplyDeleteI agree with Nick completely. Great Lesson. I am NO GOOD at math (which seems like a popular statement used by most people), and you even made me understand it. Trust me, if you can make me understand something, you should have no problem making your students understand. I could see what a complicated topic you were dealing with, and I commend you for attempting it in your first microteaching. The only criticism i have would be to slow down when your explaining the concepts, but that could have just been me being slow. I was making some dumbfounded faces I bet. Don't be afraid to ask if a certain person understands, and if he or she says no, ask another student who does understand to explain. That way, your not repeating yourself, and your getting other students involved. Otherwise, you did a fantastic job. I remember you telling me you were extremely nervous, and after what I saw, you shouldn't be nervous at all. You know your material, and you have a great attitude when your in front of people. You'll do awesome!

ReplyDeleteHey Sarah! I think you did an awesome job with your lesson! You didn't seem nervous at all even though you were the first to go in our group. That would have been enough to mess with my nerves even more. I can see what Nick and Ryan are saying about how not knowing some of the background material can make your lesson difficult, however having a good math foundation I found your lesson challenging yet a good refresher. I really liked your warm-up activity, but it may not have gone as well as you would have liked because the variation in everyone's math background is so different. I think that with the right lesson or two that would precede this one would make this lesson even more of a success. There are always things we will change about these lessons in the future, but I really liked the word problems. It showed how this lesson was relevant in today's classroom.
